Junior tennis lessons: your questions answered
Everything Adelaide parents tend to ask before their child's first session at Somerton Park. Still not sure? Book a free trial and we'll help.
Getting started
- What age can my child start tennis lessons?
- Children can start from age 3 in our Blue Ball program, which is built entirely around play and coordination. From there the Hot Shots pathway carries them through Red, Orange, Green and Yellow Ball all the way to age 18.
- Does my child need any experience or their own racquet?
- No experience is needed — our sessions assume complete beginners and use scaled equipment so every child can rally from the start. We provide age-appropriate racquets and balls for trials and sessions, so there is nothing to buy before you begin.
- How does the free trial work?
- Every new family can book one free trial session with no account and no commitment. Our coaches use it to assess your child and recommend the right group. You can book it from the home page.
Programs and levels
- What is Hot Shots tennis?
- Hot Shots is the Tennis Australia junior pathway. Children play with slower balls on smaller courts that step up in size and speed as they progress — Red Ball (ages 5-8), Orange Ball (8-10), Green Ball (10-12) and the full Yellow Ball (12+) — so they can rally and play real tennis at every stage.
- How do group lessons work at Sunrise Tennis?
- Sessions run in small groups by level, blending skill games, rallying and match play so children are always playing rather than queuing. Even in a group, every player gets individual feedback each session — we coach through feel, reading each child individually.
- Do you run school holiday programs?
- We run extra sessions and holiday activities at some points during the South Australian school holidays. Get in touch or check the home page to see what is coming up, as the schedule changes term to term.
- Do you offer private lessons?
- Yes. One-on-one coaching is available for focused skill development or match preparation. Enquire through the trial form on the home page and we will arrange a time.
Costs, weather and practical questions
- How much do tennis lessons cost in Adelaide?
- Group sessions start from $20 per session, with current term pricing shown on the home page. Families enrolling a child in two or more groups get 25% off the cheaper group for the whole term.
- Do you take Get Active Kids vouchers?
- Yes. Sunrise Tennis accepts the South Australian Get Active Kids voucher toward program fees. You submit your voucher in the parent portal after signing up.
- What happens if it rains?
- Our courts are outdoors, so light rain is usually fine. If a session has to be called off for unsafe weather, we let you know as early as we can and arrange a make-up or credit — you are not charged for a session we cancel.
- What if my child misses a session?
- Let us know in advance through the parent portal so we can note the absence. The portal also keeps you connected to your child’s progress with lesson notes and video analysis between sessions.
- Where are you located?
- Sunrise Tennis coaches at Somerton Park Tennis Club, 40 Wilton Ave, Somerton Park SA 5044 — a short drive from Glenelg, Brighton and Seacliff.
